Catalina Tile
The Catalina Island Tile industry on started in 1926 when Mr. William Wrigley's car got stuck in the mud. The dirt upon closer inspection was found to contain a large amount of red clay. Under the guidance of Wrigley family the Catalina Clay Products business blossomed into a successful tile and pottery industry on the island. The innovative style combined Moorish abstraction, local mineral glazes, and Art Deco motifs to create a unique product, while also providing year round employment for local residents.
Even today, original Catalina tile (circa 1927-1937) can be seen on the serpentine wall along Crescent Avenue, the Wrigley Memorial and Botanical Gardens, benches, store fronts, fountains and numerous other buildings in and around Avalon. |
Although the company sold in 1937, The Steamer Trunk is fortunate enough to have found a talented artist who creates hand painted, kiln fired, reproduction tiles exclusively for our store.
