Catalina Tile

The Catalina Island Tile industry on started in 1926 when Mr. William Wrigley's car got stuck in the mud. The dirt upon closer inspection was found to contain a large amount of red clay. Under the guidance of Wrigley family the Catalina Clay Products business blossomed into a successful tile and pottery industry on the island. The innovative style combined Moorish abstraction, local mineral glazes, and Art Deco motifs to create a unique product, while also providing year round employment for local residents.

Even today, original Catalina tile (circa 1927-1937) can be seen on the serpentine wall along Crescent Avenue, the Wrigley Memorial and Botanical Gardens, benches, store fronts, fountains and numerous other buildings in and around Avalon.
Although the company sold in 1937, The Steamer Trunk is fortunate enough to have found a talented artist who creates hand painted, kiln fired, reproduction tiles exclusively for our store.  Our close working relationship with her and a mutual attention to detail allows us to respond quickly to customer requests.  Click below to go to our product pages for various styles, sizes, scenes, patterns and color combinations.
